Introduction and Application of Iron Oxide Pigments
Yellow 920.jpg
Iron Oxide Pigment is a type of inorganic Color Pigment with a large quantity and a wide range of applications. Widely used in industries such as building materials, coatings, inks, rubber, plastics, ceramics, glass products, hardware and glass polishing, theatrical oil painting, painting, cosmetics, drug coloring, photocopying materials, catalysts, electronics industry, and magnetic memory materials for audio and video recording. The color of Iron Oxide pigment is very clear and pure, without the need for other organic or inorganic pigments to be added for polishing. Although not as vibrant and eye-catching as some organic or other pigments, the color tone of iron oxide pigments has a unique style, with soft and harmonious tones that are pleasing to the eye. Iron oxide pigments have high coloring power, fine and uniform particle size, and high chemical stability and physical fastness
Alkali resistance: It is very stable against any concentration of alkali and other types of alkaline substances, especially commonly used cement, lime mortar, etc. in construction, and does not cause powdering or affect the strength of cement building components. ACID resistance: It has certain resistance to weak and dilute acids, but can gradually dissolve in strong acids, especially under heating and concentration conditions. Light resistance: The color remains unchanged under strong sunlight exposure. Heat resistance: It is stable within a certain temperature limit, and beyond its temperature limit, the color begins to change. As the temperature increases, the degree of change becomes more significant. Climate resistance: It is not affected by atmospheric conditions such as cold, heat, dryness, and wetness. Resistant to polluted air: It is very stable in any polluted gas, such as hydrogen sulfide, carbon oxide, sulfur oxide, hydrogen chloride, nitrogen oxide, etc. Waterproof, oil resistant, solvent resistant permeability: insoluble in water, various mineral oils, vegetable oils, ethers, esters, ketones, and other organic solvents, and without any permeation phenomenon.
Iron oxide pigments are divided into four series according to pigments, namely: red, yellow, brown, and black.
The use of iron oxide pigments
1. Due to its excellent weather resistance, alkali resistance, and light resistance, which cannot be achieved by other inorganic or Organic Pigments, iron oxide pigments are used as coatings and coloring agents in cement building materials. For example: wall decoration, artificial marble, ground stone flooring, and coloring of silicate products. The iron oxide yellow used for the exterior walls of temples on colored cement or concrete runways has excellent weather resistance, high purity, good thermal stability, and good compatibility with other components in the application system. It can absorb ultraviolet rays, prevent substrate degradation, and can be widely used in coatings and paints. Due to its strong coverage, high UV resistance, and minimal water absorption, it can enhance the mechanical strength of the paint film, especially in terms of adhesion. Other anti rust pigments such as red lead and zinc yellow can be mixed to enhance the stability and mechanical strength of the paint film. It is now widely used in various outdoor paints, transportation paints, metal anti rust primers and topcoats. The iron oxide pigments used in coatings and paints include iron red, iron yellow, iron brown, iron black, iron green, mica iron oxide, and transparent iron oxide products, among which iron red products are widely used. Transparent iron is most suitable for use in automotive topcoats, wood coloring, canning coatings, pharmaceutical packaging coloring, and other fields.
3. Rubber and plastic are used in the application of rubber and plastic. Iron oxide red, which does not contain heavy metal ions such as copper and manganese, can be used in aviation tires to prevent rubber aging. Iron oxide pigments have the characteristics of strong coloring power and pure color. They are used as coloring agents and fillers in PVC plastic flooring and PVC colored films. They can be used in thermosetting plastics such as electric jade powder, bakelite powder, and thermoplastic plastics such as polyolefins. Iron oxide pigments, such as Color Masterbatch or paste preparations, will be more popular in the materials industry. Due to the non-toxic nature of iron oxide pigments, transparent iron oxide pigments are used abroad for coloring plastic beer bottles, pharmaceutical small bottles, and food packaging plastics. They are a new type of pigment used for plastic additives. 4. In terms of chemical stability, iron oxide is an ideal pigment for cosmetics used in food, medicine, cosmetics, and oil coloring. This pigment is relatively easy to disperse and insoluble in water, alkali, and organic solvents. Its colors range from yellow and red to black and brown, with rich hues. Iron oxide is opaque and has strong covering power. The only drawback is that the color is not bright enough, and yellow and black pigments are prone to discoloration at around 150-200 ℃. Colorants for various cosmetics: such as soap, nail polish, facial oil, skin cream, cosmetic pen, lipstick, and cigarette paper.
And it is also used as an additive for cosmetics, oil paints, painting pigments, and pet feeding materials.
5. Ceramic iron oxide pigments have excellent coloring properties. When iron oxide is added to the glaze, the color tone of the glaze becomes richer and brighter. The application of iron oxide as a raw material for building ceramics: mainly used in wall and floor tile products, imitation granite, unglazed porcelain tiles, and purple clay pottery products. The application of iron oxide in ceramic glazes: mainly used to mix glaze water of various colors. Such as celadon glaze, rabbit hair glaze, oil drop glaze, etc. 6. Iron oxide pigments are also used in colored chalk, colored matches, leather coloring agents, and other applications.
